My Story: Seeking Support to Care for My Family and Build a Future.

My name is Aiah Nglandah, from Sierra Leone, West Africa. I come from a humble background and have faced many struggles in life, but I continue to hold on to hope for a better future.

Early Life and Education:

I never had the chance to know my father. He sadly passed away two months before I was born. I was raised by my uncle, who is also now late. My mother later remarried and gave birth to three children, making me the eldest of four (two boys and two girls).

It was my late uncle who first supported my education. Even when he passed away, he left behind a will that helped me to continue my studies until I completed secondary school and entered university. With many struggles, I managed to graduate, although with a third-class degree because of the challenges I faced.

Since childhood, my dream has been to study law and become a lawyer so I could support my mother, brother, and sisters. Sadly, due to financial difficulties and my class of degree, I was unable to continue into law school.

My Mother’s Struggles:

My mother has been physically challenged since the civil war in Sierra Leone. She fell while running during the war, and this left her with a fractured leg bone that never fully healed. Now, with age and pain, she cannot walk long distances or do hard work. She depends on frequent medication to manage her health.

My Current Efforts:

For the past three years, I have worked as a primary school teacher and a private home tutor in order to take care of my mother and siblings. However, my small salary is not enough to provide for the family’s needs. It is also difficult to find higher-paid work with my current qualifications.

My Appeal

I am seeking help to support my younger sisters and brother with their education, as well as to provide medical support for my mother. In addition, I want to start a small business called CleanRide Garbage Collection, which will not only help me to sustain my family but also contribute positively to my community by reducing waste.

Family Name:

Since my father died before I was born, I am the only one carrying the surname Nglandah. My mother never knew much about my father’s background, as they met during the war. I wish to one day trace my roots and identify myself with my extended family name.
